Global Forum for the Re-Humanizing Education
The Global Forum for the Re-Humanizing Education movement realizes the solidarity of educators and scholars from diverse contexts who in their determination to participate in the critique and development of education policy and practice; it expresses the views and aspirations of a globally representative body of educators and is focused on the hopes of many colleagues in the world and expects their participation in the dialogue.

The movement is the result of an initiative that began in 2019 in Dharamsala, India, where an international committee of educators and scholars began discussing and drafting the Declaration. After five years of international discussion, a globally agreed Declaration was developed: “Educating Humanity for the Third Millennium”, based on which a Global Forum was held in February 2025 at Azim Premji University in Bangalore, India. At the conclusion of the Forum, it was decided to launch the movement and hold regular Global Forums.
The mission of the Movement is to work together globally to bring about changes in the policies and practices of education across the world in accordance with the ideals of the Declaration “Educating Humanity for the Third Millennium”.
The Declaration points to an instrumentalization of education, a neglect of human qualities in favour of skills and employability where being human is invisible, a separation from Nature, and an excessive individuality where human society is invisible. The Declaration ideas include redefining the aims, content and methods of education in light of social and political crises that pose a danger to humanity, in particular, the rise of nationalism and autocracies and the proliferation of war; the commercialization of human mentality in societies; the impact of rapidly and unregulated developing of AI and related technologies; and necessary formation of new relationships between humanity and the entirety of Nature and planet Earth. According to the collective vision of educators, education cannot be limited to the teaching of select knowledge and skills, but must promote the whole personal development, especially the development of criticality, social and political consciousness, ethics, feelings and inner peace. This calls for resistance and bringing democratic values and practices, civic and universal responsibility, empathy, caring, solidarity, and non-violence to the core of education.
The Movement’s activities are aimed at:
- dialogue with policy makers, organisations and civil societies in the academic, political and non-governmental spheres at national, regional and global levels taking into account the different traditions and geo-political contexts from different parts of the World;
- developing the ideas of the Declaration in theory and research and disseminating them globally;
- collating existing educational practices that embody ideas of the Declaration in the form of a digital database of practices, and developing necessary new practices;
- opening dialogues with children and young people across the world about the nature and purpose of education and their needs and hopes regarding education;
- discussions with academics, scholars, teachers and education practitioners, from all areas of education, including those working in community and adult educators to further develop the ideas of the Declaration;
- advocating for the implementation of the ideas of the Declaration where needed and supporting community-based initiatives.
